Q: What is IPL?

A: Intense pulsed light ( IPL ) therapy is currently the preferred mode of treatment mainly because of its efficacy, coupled with the lack of side-effects. IPL equipment utilizes xenon-filled flash lamps as primary light source – these lamps, powered by a capacitor bank, have characteristic features and emission spectra.

Q: How does IPL remove hair?

A: Highly controlled flashes of light are selectively absorbed by hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin. This high-energy light travels down the hair shaft, disables the hair follicle, and ultimately disintegrates the hair. The absorbed light heats the hair, which damages or destroys the re-growth potential of the follicle, without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Q: How can I determine if this laser hair removal treatment is right for me?

A: IPL is capable of treating any color of hair on any skin type. At consultation, our trained professionals will evaluate you to determine if you are a good candidate.

Q: Does hair color has influence on IPL laser hair removal?

A: Dark hair absorbs more light energy and is easier to treat. Coarse dark hair responds the best to IPL treatment. Light hair is slightly difficult to treat, it might take more sessions to achieve the desired results. Multiple treatment sessions are required, and results are variable. Blonde or red hair usually contains pheomelanin, which absorbs light energy less avidly than the eumelanin pigment which is present in black or brown hair. Nonetheless, MediLux IPL system is designed to treat hair of all types and colors.

Q: What areas can be treated?

A: Any area, except adjacent to the eye, where there is excess hair. The most common areas requested are the face, upper lip, neck, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.

Q: How often do I come for the treatment?

A: The treatment is performed once a month, there is no down time after the procedure.

Q: Do I need to grow the hair out before my laser hair removal consultation / treatment?

A: No, in fact we ask that you do shave the area you want treated. We’re actually targeting the anatomical structures below the skin. Surface hair interferes with this process.

Q: Do I have to stop bleaching / tweezing / using depilatories, etc?

A: It’s best, but not entirely necessary. After your first treatment, you will experience a no-growth period in the treated area and will find that it will not be necessary to bleach, tweeze, etc.

Q: Can I be treated while taking medications?

A: The only medications that are prohibited for IPL laser hair removal are Accutane and Retin-A, which must be discontinued 6 months prior to treatment.

Q: I’m pregnant / planning on becoming pregnant. Can I still be treated?

A: While there is no evidence to suggest that pregnant women cannot be treated safely, it is our policy not to treat without written permission of the patient’s physician.

Q: What happens during a treatment?

A: The treatment begins by trimming away the hair above the skin, it is recommended to shave prior to treatment in a comfort of your home. You will be asked to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. Next, a cold gel/lotion may be spread over the treatment area. The IPL hand piece is then applied to your skin and pulses of light begin disabling your unwanted hair. When the gel is removed, much of the hair is wiped off with it. The remaining hair in the treated area falls out over the next week or two.

Q: What does the treatment feel like?

A: Each pulse of light feels like a slight sting or pinch. No local anesthesia is required and most people tolerate the treatment well.

Q: Are these treatments FDA approved? Are they safe?

A: Yes, MediLux IPL System is FDA-cleared for the treatment of unwanted hair. The procedures have unparalleled safety records. Side effects are rare and generally well-tolerated.

Q: Are there any possible side effects?

A: Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment site, but this typically goes away within hours. On rare occasions, some blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly. Also, the skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications.

Q: What are the post treatment instructions?

  • A: After the treatment, you may have redness or bumps. This is normal. You may use a cold compress.
  • A: Makeup may be used. Moisturizer is good to use.
  • A: Use sun block of SPF 30 or more for a couple of weeks after your treatment.
  • A: The only other acceptable hair removal method during your treatment regimen is shaving if needed.
  • A: Hair will shed up to three weeks after treatment. It may seem like new hair growth, but it is just the hair coming out. You can help the hairs out by using a loofah or washcloth.
